Cash for Clunkers

What is this program and is it working effectively?  Democrats will tell you it is a great success while Republicans point to the program as another way the government is showing its inability to function efficiently.  What it is really proving is that the American people will take any handout it can get.  This program is giving a tax break to some Americans while making the rest of us pay the bill.  It is not the government’s money being given to these new car buyers but money belonging to all of us.

Why is this tax break being given to just those who have an old car?  I have an old refrigerator that uses more electricity then newer ones, where is my rebate to buy a new one?  This kind of thinking can go on and on.  The money is being moved from Peters pocket to Paul’s and nothing is really being accomplished.   Will this really spur on the car industry?  Probably not.  If you were in the market to buy a new car you probably would sometime in the future.  This is just moving the car sales from the future to the present.

What if these car sales were made to people who really can’t afford a car payment?  What will happen to all these cars if the owner defaults on the payments?  We are getting into another situation similar to the housing problem.  We will have lots of new cars on the used car lots.

How much are we really saving on emissions?  Since making a new car is a very emission intensive process will the emission savings between an 18mpg car and a 22 mpg car really save as much as it costs to manufacture?    None of this makes much sense to me, but that is our change you can believe in.
