The majority of places used by patrons have restroom facilities. At least one stall in the women’s facility is marked with a handicapped insignia. Most people would think that these are to be used for handicapped individuals, not everyone. It is extremely frustrating to enter the women’s restroom and find that stall being used by a child, a family, or a non-handicapped individual. Most children are taken to the restroom with a female parent or other adult. These adults should not let there children use the handicapped stall. Children should be taught to recognize these stalls as being off limit to them.
Families have a little different problem because a lot of the facilities have the diaper changing area in the handicapped stall. This is most often due to the space available but it is still frustrating. If you are handicapped and cannot use the other stalls available what are you suppose to do? This can be a big problem to those in a precarious situation.
The biggest gripe is with adult women who use this stall just because it is bigger. I have been a witness to those using it to paint their toe nails or change clothes. This is very inconsiderate. How do they know when someone will come in needing that stall. Since they are the only stalls with rails for getting on and off the seat they are a necessity for those with bad knees or backs. Since it is difficult to know if a person has a handicap unless it is visible, it would be rude to admonish anyone unless you are sure.
Therefore the solution is with women themselves. They need to be more considerate of others and teach their children the same consideration. There will always be a few people that just don’t care, but if the majority use the restroom correctly the handicapped will be thankful.
