The threat of homegrown terrorism is real and scary. Most Americans love their country and feel that others feel the same. Unfortunately there are also a few Americans who don’t love their country and want to destroy it. In most instances these are children of immigrants that came here for a better life. They wanted to give their children the freedom they didn’t have and the ability to enjoy what that freedom offers. Of course this is not the only source of home terrorism. Terrorism can come from any or all people. Look at Timothy McVeigh as an example.
However, the Muslim communities in the United States are where the al-Qaeda’s message of radical Islam is heard. Because we have freedom of speech, assemblies of radical Islam’s can hold rallies and recruit new members at will. Some experts believe that those most prone to terrorism are young, unemployed and want to belong to a group. They long for self-importance. Religion is compelling to these individuals and they are easy pawns to deceitful religious leaders.
A little known group in Detroit called the “Detroit Sleeper Cell” were convicted of providing materials to terrorists such as false identifications, videotapes and sketches of potential US targets and other support. The conviction was overturned because of misleading testimony and evidence that withheld during the trial. So, these terrorist have been allowed their freedom to plot and plan another day.
It is up to us the citizens, who love this country, to be vigilant concerning what is happening in our country. Pay attention when you hear, see or notice and report anything that is unusual.
