Strokes and What to Do

Each year thousands of people have strokes,    Some recover completely and others are left paralyzed.  What causes a stroke, how can they be prevented, and what are the symptoms?  In the following article you will learn the answers to those questions.

About 600,000 stokes are reported each year in the United States.  The good news is that if stroke victims are reached early, within 3 hours, most effects can be eliminated.

What causes a stroke?  All of us have some kind of plaque buildup in the walls of our arteries.  A stroke occurs when the blood flowing to the brain is interrupted by the plaque on the walls being too thick.    The brain cells where the blood has stooped flowing causes that portion of the brain to die because it lacks the oxygen and nutrients its needs to function.   Plaque can also cause ruptures that let the platelets form clots and will block other arteries throughout the body.

Stokes can be prevented by watching our diets.  Stop eating foods that are loaded with fat.  Watch your blood pressure, stop smoking and control your diabetes.  All of these can help you prevent having a stroke.

There are some simple ways to know if you or someone else is having a stroke.  Remember these four steps if someone falls or doesn’t seem like they are behaving normally.  Ask them to say a simple sentence (the grass is green), ask them to put both arms up straight in the air, ask them to smile and ask them to stick out their tongue.  Obviously, if they cannot talk clearly, they smile crookedly or they cannot raise their arms then these are signals.  I didn’t know if your tongue was crooked that this was also a sign.  Rush this person to emergency immediately.  Time is of the utmost importance.
