Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg was originally called Middle Plantation in 1632.  In 1698 it became the capital of the colony.  In 1872 it was the center of activity before the American Revolution.  Williamsburg is one third of the Historic Triangle of Virginia.  The other two cities are Jamestown and Vicksburg.  In the early 1690’s a royal charter was obtained to build a college.  It was named for the reigning monarchs William and Mary.  It is the second oldest college in the United States.  During the years between 1699 and 1722 many additional buildings were added to the city.  In 1722 Williamsburg obtained a royal charter to become a city.  It is believed to be the oldest city in the United States/

In April, 1775 a dispute broke out between Governor Dunmore and Patrick Henry, head of the Virginia militia, concerning the ammunition that was stored in the magazine building.  The Governor put the ammunition under guard and threatened to burn the city down if the militia didn’t back down.  It was settled when the colonists paid for the ammunition.  In 1776 the colonists declared there Declaration of Independent and the American Resolution started.  In 1780 the capitol was moved to Richmond.

During the Civil War several battles took place in and around Williamsburg.  Sometimes the city was held by the Union and other times by the Confederates. It suffered many of the disasters of other southern cities.

Today, Williamsburg is a living history lesson with workers depicting the lifestyles and culture of the 1800’s.  Some of the main attractions include the first capital building of Virginia, the Governor’s Palace, the College of William and Mary and the Williamsburg Botanical Gardens.  It is a wonderful place to visit.
