The Yukon

Created in 1898 the Yukon Territory was updated in 2003 to just Yukon.  It is the smallest of three Canadian federal territories located in the far west upper corner.   Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada and the second largest in North America.  Driving on the Klondike Highway (one of three) you see vast lakes and streams. Watch the sky for Golden Eagles and hawks.   The artic to sub-artic climate consists of very dry long cold winters lasting into late May.  In June the weather is warmer and due to the many hours of sun light the crops grow fast.   The Klondike Highway runs through the city of Whitehorse.

During the drive to Whitehorse, you are engrossed by the vastness and beauty of the countryside.  We passed through many little towns or cities and stopped periodically so we could explore the area more than just on the bus.

Whitehorse is the largest city within the tree territories.  About 66% of the population of the Yukon lives in Whitehorse.  Whitehorse is also famous for it national parks and beautiful landscapes.  You can take the White Pass railway from Whitehorse to Skagway, Alaska.  The scenery from the train is breath taking and in one area you cross a very high wooden trestle.

It is very strange to travel when it is light for 23 hours of every day.  I thought it would be hard to sleep, but you are doing a lot during the day and are tired enough to sleep even in the daylight.
