There were more causalities during this one battle than any other in the war. The battle started on July 1, 1863. The two armies collided on the northwest side of the town. Lee had assembled his troops from the north and northwest and sent the Union troops running into the town. On the second day the Union had assembled their troops in a fishhook formation. The Confederate troops were fighting on many fronts of the fishhook. Two full-scale attacks were happened on Culp’s Hill and Cemetery Hill. On July 3rd, the battle resumed on Culp’s Hill. The main battle was on Cemetery Ridge. Confederate troops numbering over 12,000 assaulted the main part of the Union forces. The Union pushed the Confederate forces back to Virginia. American causalities numbered between 46,000 and 51,000 thousand men in the three day battle.
President Lincoln used Gettysburg for his dedication ceremony of the Gettysburg National Cemetery to honor all those who had fallen in battle. In the Gettysburg Address he tried to redefine the purpose of the war.
