Denali Park is larger than the state of Massachusetts. It is composed of six million acres and is the home to Mount McKinley the highest mountain in North America. It has one road that is mainly gravel Special buses are the only vehicles allowed in the Park. When taking the bus there are a few things you should know. They are old yellow school buses and not very comfortable. During the seven hour tour the bus stops every 90 minutes to use a portable potty. Around lunch time you are given a box lunch containing a sandwich, fruit bar and a bottle of water. You can bring additional water with you, but remember only a few stops. Upon reaching the bottom of Mt. McKinley you are given some hot chocolate. Remember to bring a sweater or jacket because it is cold. On the day I was there Mt McKinley was totally visible and very beautiful. We were told that most of the time it is cloudy and you are unable to see the top.
On the ride to and from the mountain are various types of tundra. If you are lucky, you will see a lot of wild life. Caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bear and moose roam freely in the park. The flowers grow in all directions for miles and miles. The rivers run free and are white from the melting glaciers that feed them. It is all so beautiful it takes your breath away.
Make sure you take a camera with lots of memory or film. You will see so many things that a picture is the only way to savor the memory. Alaska is a picturesque state and Denali Park is one of its greatest treasures.
