Oil in Texas The East Texas oil is the largest field outside of the state of Alaska. It covers five counties and 140,000 acres. It was discovered in 1930 and is a component of the hugh region of petroleum that reaches from Kansas to New Mexico all the way to the Gulf. In 1911 attempts were made to produce oil in the area but the tooling was inefficient and the bits continued to break. By 1930 technology had advanced and the drilling machinery could handle the hard earth to drill effectively. This website http://www.todaystexas.com/blog/2009/05/09/oil-in-texas-.html tells the history of drilling and East Texas. It is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in the oil industry.
