Are you considering traveling in the United States? How do you intend to travel? Will you rent a car, motorcycle or recreational vehicle and drive yourself? Or perhaps you’ll leave the driving to someone else by traveling by bus, train or plane? Do you need to stay anywhere? If you are on a budget, try camp grounds and truck stops, unless you need the comfort of motels, hotels and bed and breakfasts. There is a story of a couple who traveled from California to Maine towing their small camper for next to nothing by staying overnight at truck stops and similar areas.
There is plenty to see if you have the time. National and state parks are great getaways. There are 22 states with an ocean coastline and eight states on the Great Lakes. The Appalachian Mountains in the east and the Rocky Mountains in the west and right in the middle of it all is Great Plains in which you will find wide open spaces.
Why not consider traveling the southern states in winter and the northern states in the summer months in an RV? Or, did you realize you could travel by train on Amtrak from Portland, Maine to Los Angeles, California in 43 hours? How about from Miami, Florida to Seattle, Washington in 46 hours? You can also rent a car by the month plus miles, which may end up costing quite a few dollars but the whole point is to see the country! Try traveling the secondary roads and not the main highways so you will see more of the country, not just traffic and billboards.
