During the first 100 years the Tigers were playing, they won the World Series four times. That is a rather dismal record. Some teams have done worst like the Cubs and several have done mush better like the Yankees. In most cases money paid for the best players is the major reason. The more you pay to build your team, the better team you will have.
In 2000 through 2002 the Tigers were at their worst finishing in last or close to it all three years. In 2003, trying to bring back some of the wonderful days of 1984, management hired Alan Trammel as manager and Kirk Gibson and Lance Parish as coaches for the year. This didn’t work and the Tigers had their worst record in the history of American League Baseball. In 2004 the team did really well during the first half of the season and then they fizzled out ending up in 4th place. The 2005 season was almost a repeat of 2004. The Tigers played really well in the first half of the season above the .500 mark. After the All Star Game the pitching fell apart and they ended up in 4th place again.
He 2006 season would prove to be very exciting. The team started out really good and then started to slide. Jim Leland, the new manager told the press “we stink.” Realizing they had to prove Leland wrong the team won 28 of the next 38 games. They were in first place the whole season. Fans couldn’t get enough of their Tigers. The pitching was great and the hitting fantastic. They won the pennant by beating the Oakland Athletics in four straight games. However they had to wait a week until they could play The St Louis Cardinals for the World Series. Perhaps that was not good as they were sluggish and made so many errors that it looked like little league games. The Tigers lost the World Series in five games.
The Tigers kept there team together for 2007 hoping to repeat the 2006 season. They started slow due to a lot of injuries. At the beginning of August they were neck and neck with the Cleveland Indians but ended the month on a losing streak They did well in September, but not good enough and ended in 2nd behind the Indians. The 2008 season was another disaster. The Tigers ended in last place in the Central Division.
The 2009 season has started out on a positive note. Let’s all hope that we can have a winning season this year. Let’s Go Tigers!!
