Medically Themed Books

There have been many interesting and moving books written that have a medical theme, and one of them written in 1970, by Erich Segal, was, “Love Story.” It is a book about a wealthy and affluent family’s son that is attending Harvard Law School, and falls in love with a poor and high-spirited girl attending Radcliffe College.

The young man’s father does not believe that a Radcliffe girl is good enough for his son, or to be in their family, and tries to prevent them from being married. They do get married and she later is diagnosed with Leukemia.

The book, “Dying Young,” by Marti Leimbach, who lives in England and teaches at Oxford University, is about a love triangle between a man who is battling Leukemia, his girlfriend and another man, but she does not want to leave him alone because of his illness.

“The Shining,” by Stephen King, is the story of a man that takes the position as caretaker of a hotel for the winter, and moves in with his wife and child. The hotel seems to have a mind of its own and appears to take control of the man, who has a psychotic breakdown and tries to kill his wife and little boy.

Jodi Picoult wrote the book “My Sisters Keeper” in 2005. The book is about a girl that was conceived so that she could be a donor for her older sister who has Leukemia, and after helping her sister so many times, and knowing that she was only born for one reason, she decides against donating one of her kidneys to her sister.
