The Fox News Channel was the vision of media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, who along with ex NBC executive, Ralph Ailes, created The Fox News Channel. The channel aired for the first time on October 7, 1996 on cable television. Starting with 17 million cable subscribers in 1996, it has grown to be one of the most popular news networks in cable.
Many people with liberal views have been critics of the network stating that Fox is too conservative in their broadcast. Fox not only denies this, but also takes great pride in doing fair and balanced news.
Some of the news shows that Fox started with in 1996 where "The O'Reilly Report" (which is now "The O'Reilly Factor"), "The Crier Report" and "Hannity and Colmes." Another Fox first was the Fox News Alert, which was designed to break into normal broadcast when there is breaking news.
In 2004, the news channel out-rated the other three major networks during the Republican National Convention. Towards the end of 2006 and 2007, the network saw a slight decline in viewers. The coverage of the Lebanon War of 2006 and the crisis in North Korea helped keep Fox number one. Fox also had the two top rated shows on cable news with "The O'Reilly Factor" and "Hannity and Colmes."
The Fox News Channel is now carried in over 40 countries around the world and on most all American bases. Fox also shares news stories with Sky News who it shares ownership with. The newscast can also be heard on both Sirius and XM Satellite radio.
