Throughout his entire presidential campaign, President Barrack Obama spoke about the need for change in the United States and promised it to the American people. Former Speaker of the House, Republican Representative Newt Gingrich, believes that the change America needs is not what President Obama will deliver. America does need change, Gingrich agrees, but they need real change to benefit the American people. Gingrich is for smaller government that’s competent, “efficient and responsive,” similar to the capability of a business, such as UPS or FedEx.
He contrasts the inefficiency of the federal government with these two extremely competent businesses. Whereas these companies can locate 15 million packages per day, he says, “the federal bureaucracy can’t locate between 10 and 20 million” illegal persons in this country. So, what kind of real change does Gingrich talk about in his book by the same name? He believes our government is too big, inefficient and a large part of the problem is cowing down to the demands of special interests groups. He talks about giving Americans “truth about what works in the world around us” and what fails.
“Real change means transforming our system,” Gingrich writes. He believes that politicians are too caught up in their own agendas instead of responding to what the American people want. He uses the city of Detroit, Michigan as an example. Detroit used to have almost 2 million people in 1950, along with the highest income per person. Now, it has less than one million people and ranks 62nd in per capita income. Gingrich states, “Michigan…had been hit by a Democratic governor, Democratic legislature (and) raised taxes…The truth is large bureaucracies are destructive. High taxes are destructive.” The change we need: “Reduce spending and tax cuts.”
