The genre of romance literature spreads thicker than just romance novels. It also appeals to women of all cultures, backgrounds and experiences. Harlequin is one of the publishing companies, along with others, that not only provides literature of the romance genre, but also tries to make it tasteful and compelling. When considering romance literature, a reader needs to consider a few things: Does this literature appear fulfilling, is it a quick read or can this genre of reading become a satisfying hobby?
So, what are some of the characteristics of a romance novel that seems to entice millions of women? That question has been asked, researched and pondered since the genre of writing has been in full swing. Some of the answers are that women read to escape their reality. If they don’t have a man in their life, or are in an unfulfilling relationship, then romance novels prove to be an escape from reality. The storylines, and those little details that only the character knows, are things that women seem to thrive on.
Some of the aspects of romance literature that are less appealing, however, are the fact that many feel that they are carbon copies of the same story. Many readers begin to get bored with the same storyline of a handsome hunk chasing the underappreciated damsel. Many writers have tried to amp up the storyline by changing time periods, ethnicity and economics. The other change that seems to work is the cover art. The flamboyant pictures on the cover leave women daydreaming before they even crack the cover.
